Did you know that in Morocco they did covers of Little Richard with a funky groove… or of Beethoven in a garage-style? That 70s Tunisian bands could have inspired Lenny Kaye for an Arabic version of the Nuggets? Did you know that there was fusion jazz in the Sudan, disco-rumba in Algeria, psychedelic-exploitation in Egypt and soul-pop in Libya? Well now you do, thanks to the skilful Berlin digger Jannis Stürtz. This clairvoyant of Saracen rare grooves searches for LPs in Casablanca, tests them at DJ sessions in London and shares them with everybody through the compilations on his label Habibi Funk. Since he discovered the Arabic cover of Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag by Fadoul, Stürtz has not stopped searching and searching, DJing and DJing, and rereleasing and rereleasing. In response to this blessed obsession all we can say is: šukran!
